The Hamsun Lounge

Knut Hamsuns skrev boken “Den siste glæde” på Sortland Hotell

“– Å trekke meg tilbake og sitte i ensomheten i skogen og ha det godt og mørkt omkring meg. Det er den siste glede.”

The Nobel prize winning author Knut Hamsun wrote his famous book “ Den siste Glæde” right here in our hotel, between 191 and 1912. To honnor him and his work we opened the Hamsun lounge in 2009. While in Sortland, Hamsun lived and worked in our room number 10. The door to his room is displayed in the lounge together with a bust of the author by artist Nico Wideberg and his complete works.

Knut Hamsuns grandson, Leif, unveiled the bust at the opening, and the famous Norwegian actor Bjørn Sundquist read a prologue dedicated to Hamsun by fellow author Lars Saabye Christensen.
